Submission Guidelines

This biannual digital & print magazine accepts creative nonfiction, essays, and memoir pieces that explore some aspect of personal experience in the outdoors. This includes but is not limited to adventure in extreme wilderness landscapes as well as urban, whether it is about climbing trees, mountains or buildings, kayaking rivers or oceans, walking in pursuit of rare insects, pursuing the art of parkour, oceanic living, or mountain culture. Any latitude and longitude is game, so long as it is your best original writing, takes readers beyond the mundane and seeks to discover deeper meaning. Essays of academic nature will not be considered.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND POETRY (except for haiku).

Nonfiction Prose: There is a 5,000 word limit per submission. Send no more than two pieces of nonfiction prose (no longer than 5,000 words put together). Please wait until the next reading period to submit again. Submissions should be 12-point Times New Roman font with standard one inch margins. Pages must be double-spaced and numbered with name and contact info typed at the top of your first page. Please provide a brief bio about yourself/your work to be published with your accepted submission. At this time Adventum cannot offer payment for contributions.

Simultaneous submissions are considered, but immediate notification of acceptance elsewhere is required.
Response time is 4-10 weeks. Issues will be made available on the website in digital format in July and January.

Reading periods are February 1 to May 15 and August 1 to November 10. SUBMISSIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Online submissions only
Please submit your work here.

Photography: Accepts high quality digital photography. Will consider individual photos as well as photo essays. Please submit between 2 and 8 JPEG’s, no larger than 2MB each. Each image should have a title and a short (one sentence is fine) comment about each image. Viewers will not be able to right click and steal your images, as they will be within the digital magazine format.
Photography is accepted electronically via email: submit@adventummagazine.com or in the general submissions category through our submission manager.

Haiku: Accepts seasonal haiku (summer/fall in the July issue, and winter/spring in the January issue). Please send no more than 10 haiku at one time. The conventional 5-7-5 form is looked upon favorably, however we acknowledge variations in this form and realize that in many cases (when writing in English and not Japanese) this freedom may be beneficial. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY OTHER FORM OF POETRY.
